Scuba Diving In Malaysia
Scuba diving in Malaysia has been the home for local divers for many years.
Since the discovery of
Pulau Sipadan
off the east coast of
Sabah,
it has become a top Asian dive destination and fast becoming one of the leading destinations of the world as Malaysia.
Malaysia is located in the heart of the Indo-Pacific basin with the richest marine environment; the incredible bio-diversity of marine life guarantees an astounding experience to divers. The magnificent tropical coral reef structure, even at shallow depths, presents the macro-fauna and large pelagic predators within a single dive destination. This is unique in nature as only a handful of destinations in the world can boast of this marvel. From schools of barracudas, and hammerhead sharks to the solitary green turtle and frogfish and to the multicoloured fan and whip gorgonians, there will always be a touch of bewilderment and wonder which will mesmerize any diver.
There are vast arrays of dive locations ranging from vertical walls to fringing coral atolls to wreck dives and even macro and muck diving. Almost all the islands in Malaysia cater for divers of all levels of dive experience.
The diversity of marine life around the waters of islands along the western Peninsular coast such as Pulau Pangkor and Pulau Payar differs from those of the eastern coast. The islands on the eastern coast of the Peninsular Malaysia such as Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Lang Tengah, Pulau Redang, Pulau Kapas
(known as Pulau Redang Marine Park),
Pulau Tenggol
and the
Pulau Tioman
group of islands feature good coral growth and abundant fish life. The Kuantan ship wreck resting at 23 meters deep, 20 nautical miles off the coast of Kuantan is covered with growth and its crack is also the home of a moray eel and big groupers.
Islands on the coast of the East of Malaysia on the other hand offer the true oceanic depths of 600 meters to more than 1000 meters to high level professional scuba divers. In Sabah, Pulau Sipadan, with its breathtaking vertical dives, and vast array of deep ocean species, was recognized as an underwater haven by Jacques Cousteau, the veteran in 'exploration of the wonders of the deep'.
Pulau Layang Layang
has the richest wildlife and greatest marine biodiversity in the world. It is blessed with the best water visibility from 20 to 50 meters.
Pulau Lankayan,
Pulau Mabul
and
Pulau Kapalai
are famous for their 'muck dives'. Pulau Talang Talang and Turtle Rock off Sarawak feature reef diving and further away from the mainland, scuba divers can engage in wreck diving Katori Maru, a World War ll Japanese troop carrier.
