Preparation and How to Assemble
Scuba Diving Equipment.

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for assembling and preparation for scuba diving gear and equipment for beginning divers, or for those in need of a quick refresher. Scuba diving is a fun and adventurous activity which allows you to explore a new and exciting world, one that many will never experience. It is also an activity that needs to be taken seriously in order to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.

Correctly assembling and preparation of your gear is the first step in ensuring safety and getting you ready for your adventure into innerspace.

Gear and preparation checklist;

• Mask

• Snorkel

• Fins

• Wetsuit

• Tank / Cylinder

• BCD (Buoyancy control device)

• Regulator

• Alternate air source

• Submersible pressure gauge (SPG)

• Depth gauge

• Compass

Getting started

1. Put BCD on the tank

• Wet the BCD in ocean or freshwater source. Nylon stretches when wet and if not moistened before attachment, the BCD might loosen in water.

• Slide the BCD onto the tank, starting from the top. Make sure the tank is standing.

• Make sure the valve opening faces toward the BCD and the back of your head. The collar of the BCD should be even with the top of the tank. You can adjust it for your comfort now or in a later step.

• Secure and tighten the BCD to the tank. Swing over the locking mechanism from the right side of the tank to the left. This can be difficult so if you can’t get it to lock, ask your buddy for help.

• Make sure everything is secure. Make sure the band does not slide. Pick up the unit and shake it gently to ensure nothing is loose. If loose, readjust and tighten.

2. Attach the regulator

• Remove the plastic cap over the tank valve opening.

• Check and clean O-ring. If O-ring is missing get a new one or DO NOT DIVE.

• Unscrew the yoke screw and remove dust cap.

• Preparation for regulator is by placing the tank/BCD unit in front of you with the BCD away from you. Align the first stage opening with the tank valve and tighten. At this point the second stage hose (the regulator) should be on the right. The primary second stage will go over your right shoulder.

• Attach the low-pressure hose on the regulator to the BCD low-pressure inflator.

3. Turn on and check air

• Hold the SPG in your hand facing away from you. This is a precaution in case the face of the unit bursts when the air is turned on. Unlikely, but still possible.

• Open the valve slowly. If you hear a leak, check the O-ring again. It may be dirty of faulty.

• As you turn the valve, watch the pressure gauge to make sure it is working correctly and the pressure is increasing.

• Turn the valve gently as until it stops and then turn it half a turn forward. Check to make sure air is flowing by pressing the purge valve a few times and tries breathing through the regulator. If breathing does not come easily, check the exhaust valve as it may be stuck.

• If you are not getting air easily or the tank is not full DO NOT DIVE.

4. Lay the unit on the ground and prepare the remaining gear

• Make sure the BCD is facing up.

• Make sure the second stage is on top of the BCD and out of the dirt.

5. Put on and adjust weight belt

• If this is your first time scuba diving you may have to experiment with the amount of weight you need that is appropriate for your weight.

• Distribute the weights evenly around the belt.

• Hold the buckle in your left and the other end in your right.

• Lay the belt across the small of your back and bend over slightly to take some strain off your back.

• Buckle it.

• Make sure you are aware of your belt position and can remove it quickly. In case of an emergency you need to be able to release the belt and surface immediately.

6. Put the tank/BCD unit on

• During your preparation for scuba diving, have your buddy help hold your unit and slip it on as you would a jacket. Adjust all straps and make sure all hoses are free.

7. Put on mask, snorkel and fins

• Make sure mask is clear of debris and fog.

• You may find it easier to enter the water first and then put your fins on.
