Introduction Dive With Sharks

by Patrick
(The Netherlands)

Dive with sharks

Having no experiences with Scuba Diving, we arrived in Cairns, Australia on one of our travels. This is the perfect location for a trip to the Great Barrier Reef, the number one location in the world for diving.

Obviously, we went on a trip to the reef. On our first stop, we enjoyed the magnificent colors of the reef and the fish while snorkeling.

On the second stop, on the outer parts of the Great Barrier Reef, there was an opportunity to go diving. Having no license, I wanted to take the opportunity to make an introduction dive.

But, since I was the only one interested in that opportunity, there was no introduction dive. I insisted, and already had an introduction dive before, so they agreed to let me accompany the certified divers.

While the others, including my girlfriend Sabine, went snorkeling, me and the certified divers put on our diving gear. While we did that, Sabine returned to the ship, with a shocked look on het face: "Sharks!!" she said.

Yeah right, we wouldn't be allowed in the water when there would be sharks there, would we?

A little later, I was in the water with the others, and indeed, there were sharks. White tip reef sharks, to be exact. And we were feeding and petting them, amazing...

We went on to see more fish, including murene eels and a huge humphead wrasse. But I will never forget being close with the sharks, being on an introduction dive...
